What Is A Kuchen?

Kuchen, literally translated from German to English, means cake. This traditional treat usually consists of a slightly sweet dough topped with a custard layer. A lot of times, it is finished with a fruit topping. But sometimes, there is a layer of cinnamon sugar on top. It can be eaten as a dessert, midday snack or paired with Coffee or Tea.

Today, it mainly lives on in the U.S. in South Dakota, where it is the official State Dessert. It’s featured in many festivals during the year throughout the state.

How To Make Peach Kuchen

We’ve topped out Kuchen with Peaches and think it’s absolutely delicious! For step-by-step instructions, check out our printable recipe card below. But here is what you’ll need to get started.

  • FLOUR – Any brand of all-purpose flour.
  • POWDERED SUGAR – Using confectioners sugar in this recipe is what gives this dough it’s slightly sweet flavor.
  • SALT – It’s always important to bake desserts with salt to offset the sweetness.
  • BUTTER – Unsalted butter. Cubed and Cold. We will be cutting the butter into the dry ingredients.
  • CANNED PEACHES – Drained. Do not use Peach Pie Filling.
  • EGGS – If possible, get your eggs to room temperature before adding.
  • GRANULATED SUGAR – This will be mixed in to make our custard layer.
  • SOUR CREAM – The main ingredient of our custard layer. You can try using light sour cream, but it may alter the results of this dish.

Do You Need To Use Canned Fruit in A Kuchen Recipe?

You can use fresh or frozen peaches for this kuchen recipe. If using Frozen Peaches, make sure you thaw them first and use a paper towel to pat out any access moisture. If using fresh peaches, you may need to increase the baking time a bit.

Can You Use Any Fruit As A Kuchen Topping?

Kuchens are one of those recipes that seem to have been adapted in many ways. We’ve seen Kuchen topped with blueberries, strawberries, prunes, plums, cherries, apples and pears. We’ve also seen versions with just sprinkle of cinnamon and sugar on top. Feel free to try whatever sounds good to you.

Storage, Freezing and Leftovers

You don’t need to refrigerate leftover kuchen. It will be fine in an airtight container, or wrapped in plastic wrap on your counter. Leftovers should stay good for around 4 days.

I wouldn’t freeze Kuchen. The custard layer won’t thaw out very well.

We hope you enjoy this delicious German Kuchen Recipe. We’d love to hear how it turns out in the comment section. Happy Eating!

In your pictures where you are pressing the light colored dough into the bottom of the pan, it looks like there is already a crust going up the side. Are my eyes playing tricks on me or is there another crust

I can see your confusion. Yes, it does look like that but it’s just some discoloration with the pan. If you look at some of the pics of completed recipe higher in the post, you’ll see one where a piece has been cut out of the pan and you can see that there isn’t a second crust in there. Thanks for clarifying.
