DO YOU NEED A LICENSE TO MAKE AND SELL DOG TREATS?

In the US, most states will require you at minimum to have a business license in order to sell homemade dog treats. Find more information on that topic HERE.

CAN YOU USE REGULAR FLOUR TO MAKE DOG TREATS?

Some dogs, just like humans, actually have a sensitivity to wheat. While some recipes may call for regular baking flours, we like to make flour with oatmeal, like in this recipe, as it tends to be safest for a dog’s digestive system.

How to Make Homemade Dog Treats

Step 1: Gather your ingredients.

You will need:

Step 2: Make your oatmeal flour.

To make yourhomemade dog treats, start by putting the oatmeal in the food processor. Let it do its thing for a minute at a time, until it’s turned into a fine powder, similar in texture to flour. Place the flour in a bowl and set aside.

Slice up the banana, and place it in the food processor with the peanut butter. Be sure your peanut butter doesn’t contain the ingredient xylitol, as it can be harmful to dogs.Let it run until it’s combined. You may have to use a spoon to scrape the edges of the food processor, and then let it run again.

Take a couple of tablespoons of the oatmeal “flour” you made, and set it aside. Slowly add the oatmeal flour to the food processor, while it’s running, a tablespoon at a time. Your food processor will most likely not like this, and will whine and groan, but it should be fine.

Step 3: Roll out the Homemade Dog Treat dough.

Sprinkle the oatmeal flour you set aside on a clean workspace, and on top of the ball of “dough” from the food processor. Use a rolling pin and roll it out until it’s about a quarter of an inch thick.

Step 4: Roll and cut out.

Use a cookie cutter to cut out cute shapes, or you can be lame and just cut out strips or something. I used a cookie cutter, because I’m not lame.

Poke each shape with a fork before sticking them in the oven.

Step 5: Bake.

Grease a baking sheet, and bake them at 350 for 12-15 minutes. Check them at 12 minutes, and if they’re starting to look too dark, remove them. They won’t ever get super hard and crispy, but they will get firm. After you pull them out of the oven, place them on a cooling rack to cool.

Once they’re cool, feed them to your puppy (or your baby, I mean, both my baby and the puppies were snacking!) and watch them go crazy!

WHAT ARE THE HEALTHIEST DOG TREATS?

The healthiest dog treats are always going to be ones you can make yourself at home. Recipes like this one, that use simple, natural ingredients are the best and safest option for your fur babies. Our dogs just love these homemade dog treats, and gobble them right up! They’re really quick to make, and I love knowing exactly what’s in the treats I give my dogs!

HOW LONG DO HOMEMADE DOG TREATS LAST?

This recipe for homemade dog treats will last, in a sealed container, for up to two weeks. It’s best if they’re stored in a cool, dry area to prevent mold from growing prematurely.

If you have peanut butter, bananas, and oatmeal, you can make these homemade dog treats for your puppy! They're super simple and dogs love 'em!

Ingredients

  • One ripe-ish banana
  • 1/2 cup of creamy peanut butter (make sure your peanut butter doesn't contain xylitol)
  • 1 1/2 cups of oatmeal

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350.
  2. Put your oatmeal in a food processor and let it process one minute at a time, until it's a fine "flour-like" consistency.
  3. Place the "oatmeal flour" in a bowl and set aside.
  4. Slice up the banana and add it and the peanut butter to the food processor.
  5. Let it run until it's combined. You may have to use a spoon to scrape the edges of the processor and let it run again.
  6. Set aside a couple of tablespoons of the "oatmeal flour".
  7. Slowly pour the rest of it into the food processor while it's running with with peanut butter and banana mixture.
  8. Sprinkle the reserved "oatmeal flour" onto a dry, flat surface.
  9. Roll out your homemade dog treats dough until it's about 1/4" thick.
  10. Use a cookie cutter (I used a dog bone shaped cookie cutter) and cut out the homemade dog treats and place them on a greased cookie sheet.
  11. Bake them at 350 for 12-15 minutes. Check them at 12 minutes, and if they already look dark, pull them out.
  12. Let them cool on the pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.
  13. Store in an air-tight container for up to 2 weeks.

Notes

  • Don't use a peanut butter that contains xylitol, as it's harmful to dogs.
  • These will not get crispy, so don't over-bake.
  • Store them in an air-tight container for best results.
